Let’s start with the fact that Trump has a LONG history of lying.
This is just the one that tops my list. If you’re such a big Trump supporter that you can’t even admit that President Trump has a penchant for excessively stretching the truth, then this column is not for you.
Aside from Trump’s overall unfitness for office, Democrats and many Never Trumpers (myself very much included) criticized Trump for lying about the election results and, at the very least, for inciting a mob that obstructed the peaceful transition of power.
And who can blame us?
Accordingly, Democrats and others repeatedly (and correctly asserted) that Trump’s lies about the election created a hostile environment that he incited, which nearly prevented Congress from certifying the elections.
Now, that’s me putting it very politely.
On June 1, 2023, in my humble opinion, any chance of Biden winning the race evaporated when he stumbled on stage during a USAFA ceremony.
Over the following year, there would be numerous occasions when Biden appeared confused and, to put it mildly, too old for the job.
These are just the top two that came to my mind. There are many, many more. Google is your friend, people.
And let’s not forget this outstanding performance that his own team requested!
And what did the Democrats do in response to this?
Sorry, let’s not forget the bravest candidate in the 2024 Presidential race: Dean Phillips.
I would argue that Trump’s big lie was worse than Team Biden’s because it profoundly affected the country’s civic hygiene and its commitment to the principles of the Constitution. And, let’s not forget, that FDR basically did the same thing.
Nevertheless, if Democrats genuinely want to continue criticizing voters for supporting Trump, perhaps it’s time we all accept our role in enabling a vain man’s attempt to cling to power.
Lies and frauds are the stock trade of political actors - it is how they win elections with the help of the notoriously fickle American electorate. We have met the enemy and he is us.
