Thanks Will. Your words are helping to temper the overwhelming sense of dread I feel for our country and our allies. As Carlos Lozada said in his NYT editorial, it's time to stop pretending Trump is not who we are as a nation. We obviously have a lot of work to do...

We did loose the day in a big way. I learned of the mandate about 2:30 this morning. I was so off - not even close. I thought it would be weeks before we knew the winner. Thanks for the article. I’m ready to learn but it’s going to take a bit. Keep writing. It helps me and many others.

Wonderful article and spot on. An honest and objective look at what needs to change after admitting one lost fair and square is indeed the beginning of new leadership for the Dems. Realizing that some people of course voted for Trump because he is Trump but that the majority of people just voted for his policies and change . So hopefully the Dems can dig deep and be objective and then get to work changing how they can support the American people will mean we will have a strong Dem Party. And that is crucial to a great America.

I hope the very scale of the Dem defeat will help the party reflect on what went wrong and how to do better. Disconnect between overall popular vote and Electoral College outcome in 2016 was a convenient excuse to focus on a problem that simply could not be dealt with, rather than focusing on how to fix policy and messaging, which was feasible. Kamala tried tacking toward a more reasonable and popular center, but it was too little too late. Not convincing. Of course, we’ll now hear claims that our problem was not going Left enough….

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross chronicled the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Even though we've already done this in 2016, I suspect many of us will need to explicitly transit every single one of those steps before we arrive at acceptance. But acceptance needs to happen sooner than later. Only after we truly accept that this is the world now, can we start to rally around changing it. And this time we need to not leave ANYONE behind.

Well, now that the Republicrats and Demopublicans have sorted themselves out it appears time to join the loyal (to the Constitution and the rule of law) opposition. The Republicrats promise retribution and mass deportation - let us see if they deliver. Project 2025 will probably now gear up for the transition with a unified Congress and Executive Branch along with SCOTUS. We appear to have effectively a one-party government with an authoritarian leader coming into power in January.

It is what it is and now is the time to gear up for a struggle to maintain both the Constitution and the rule of law in this country. The notoriously fickle American Electorate and the craven have decided. YMMV.

I appreciate any thoughts on what went so wrong for the Democratic party. I am open to listen and learn. I am still the same person, with the same values and ethics. I intend to keep walking my path. I believe in compassion and love. I believe in helping people who.are in any kind of need. I believe in standing against evil. I believe a new day will come.
