This is a lovely story. Truly amazing testament to the power of love and grace and maturity. But as a former psych nurse (struggling to find her way in Oncology), please remember that “funny farm” is a very place we go to try to bestow care and grace on others. I’m not particularly PC, but it’s a fundamental part of who I am now.

I appreciate your kind words, ma’am.

I have respect for anyone who goes and seeks mental health treatment. Many of my brothers in arms went into those places and I’m so proud of them for saying they needed help.

I say “funny farm” to lighten the mood. It’s okay to laugh about hard things. A little laughter while talking about grief and misery makes the medicine go down.

Gee, IMO humor should be sacrosanct, and Funny Farm is funny. (Funny haHa, to be precise.)

I actually accidentally clicked on this e-mail, but it pulled me in after reading a couple of sentences. I'm a new subscriber, but resonate with your military background which is why I subscribed in the first place.

I loved this article because it was so quick an overview of your relationship with your wife. You gave just enough detail to make the story make sense and have meaning in its buildup to the "finish" or to today anyway.

I appreciate that you are sharing your story because, no doubt, there are thousands of other similar stories and many I'm sure are even worse without a storybook ending. For many of us, getting deployed in the military was challenging and difficult but we were far away from the actual battles. Not that we weren't impacted, but we weren't making the life-death decisions and/or seeing our buddies get injured or worse.

Anyway...I underappreciated what so many went through and the importance of being able to share it publicly. Thanks for your service in the military and out.

What a wonderful story!! I love how you give your wife so much of the credit. Truly shows the sacrifices our Military families face day in and day out as well. She sounds like an amazing woman. A keeper for sure!!

Thanks for sharing such a beautiful personal and yes, romantic love story of two wonderful human beings. God willing you'll have a long and fruitful life together along with your precious daughter and maybe more. ❤️🌹

I cannot love this more....

As Joe and I approach our 50th anniversary, my thought has been how many times we could have thrown in the towel. Though your experiences took so much grit and determination, the big reminder of what unites us is *love* (and friendship)and acceptance that we won't always like each other. *Yeah..true*😘 Yet...here we are!

When you come out the other side of challenges, you are building a beautiful *family story*. What a lucky girl your precious daughter is to have two wonderful parents filling her life with realistic expectations but so much joy.

Cheers to surviving and thriving for many more anniversaries.🥂🥰

Faith comes in all forms. I find private spirituality refreshing and honest. As I tell my friends, I ain't gonna "out-Bible-verse" you.

My constant hashtag is #OurChildrenAreWatching ....

You are doing great dad. Keep it going.

FACTS.

Fun story: We went to a Royals game on our third date. During the drive to the game, we were chatting about past relationships. Ya know, I'm trying to figure out if this was all a mirage or if we were really vibing. I asked her why her past boyfriends didn't last and she said, "I just kind of grew bored with them. I need someone who is challenging." I immediately thought, "Ooooooohhhhhhhh, challenge accepted."

What a beautiful tribute to a much-loved wife and partner. Will Selber, you have some real talent for expressing emotions in your words; this is not the first post of yours that I have found deeply moving.
