My father served as a Coast Guard radio officer aboard Liberty ships bringing supplies for the invasion of Europe. After D-day his ship was bombed in the harbor at Marseille. On the way over ships either side of his were torpedoed. They were unable to help survivors because the danger was losing way would invite another attack. He received a commendation after he was demobilized and then denied veteran status because his role was judged 'non-combatant'. Go figure. President Reagan recognized his service during his term in office and he was granted veteran status - only about 40 years after he earned it. As for the merchant seamen who also happened to be on board the ships - well, you know.
Your title is correct, it is about more than the Uniform - it is about duty, honor, and country above party. Demopublicans and Republicrats alike may wish to reflect on the fact that freedom is not free.
