Howdy,
I’ve been Never Trump from the Jump. It’s just how I roll, but I wasn’t always a “Democrat.” Back in the old days, I was probably considered a moderate Republican. In 2012, I proudly supported Jon Huntsman, whose campaign imploded when he decided to speak—wait for it, wait for it—Chinese at a GOP debate!
LOL.
It’s probably not the wisest move, but I dug it!
Then came 2016. It’s hard to remember that GOP primary, but the GOP had the dream team lineup!
I was all in for Jeb! Then, it was Little Marco! Then, it was even—G*d help me—Ted Cruz, after that son-of-a-bitch John Kasich refused to step aside and let the anti-Trump vote coalesce.
I’m not bitter!
Then Donald Trump won the primary, and I swallowed hard and voted for HRC! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would pull the lever for HRC! But, alas, I was never going to vote for Donald Trump.
Ever.
I even bought the “Never Trump” bracelet from little Marco!
The Trump years were brutal. I was in Afghanistan when 6 January took place, and I was horrified. The Afghans called me to see if we were doing okay— a first. I won’t go through all of Trump’s great hits, but needless to say, I loathed him.
I didn’t hate everything Trump did—and neither should you, IMHO. I thought the Abraham Accords were great. I thought moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem was long overdue and, yet again, showed that most of the foreign policy establishment can’t find their asses with both hands. I liked the Gorsuch and ACB picks (not so much Kavanaugh).
Who likes tax cuts for the “rich”—this guy right here!
In short, there was a lot for me to like—but it didn’t outweigh all the rest.
So, I enthusiastically voted for Biden. Yep. I was all in on him. Needless to say, I loath him now for reasons that everyone knows (Afghanistan). I think there’s a lot not to like about him, especially regarding foreign policy.
I give him more credit in the Pacific, especially with South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and Australia. But, as he usually does, he was far too timid with Putin and should’ve gone for the kill shot when his invasion petered out. At the end of the day, under his watch, Al Qaeda defeated the United States, Putin invaded Ukraine, and Hamas conducted the largest ethnic cleansing since the Holocaust.
Not great, Bob.
Is this all his fault? No. But this is politics, not the Lincoln-Douglas debates.
Now, I’m never one to disparage somebody for their vote. I’ve found that it doesn’t really do much to sway people. The best you can do is find those who are apprehensive and try to convince them to at least not vote for him. I’ve succeeded in that endeavor numerous times. So, ya know, I’ve done my share.
I’m not a big Kamala Harris fan. I think she’ll continue Biden’s failed foreign policy approach. Again, yes, she’s better than Trump. Duh. But when you’re dealing with double-haters (like me), let me tell you what doesn’t work.
“Look, bruh, Harris is going to make all your wildest dreams come true.”
Better approach:
“Yeah, she sucks, bruh, I get it. But do you really want to vote for someone who tried to overturn an election?”
That’s why people like Liz Cheney and Adam Kizinger are so important. I wish Mitt Romney would support her, but unlike Liz and Adam, he never voted for him and voted for impeachment twice. So, I don’t know, leave Mitt alone. It’s not like Utah is going to go for Harris.
Liz Cheney is one of my heroes.
I have a daughter, and she’s the only thing that matters to me. She’s my heart. And I want her to be like Liz when she grows up. I want her to take a stand when it matters. That ain’t easy, believe me, I know. It wasn’t easy fighting for the Afghans while on active duty. It wasn’t easy getting hundreds of Afghans out. It’s not easy to continue to uphold our promises to our Afghan allies.
But standing on principles matters—especially when you think you’ll lose everything in the process.
That’s why Liz Cheney is your secret weapon in convincing double-haters. I lead with it every time.
“Liz Cheney—and her father, Darth Vader—are voting for Harris. I think that should tell you something?”
Now, this won’t work for everyone. We’ve entered an alternate reality where W, McCain, Romney, Pence, and the Cheneys are less popular than Tulsi Gabbard (vomit) inside the GOP. Some people just want the show, or they just want to punish the Libs. Should you encounter such people, just move along. There’s no need to waste your time. Don’t be an asshole, either, because that doesn’t help the cause either.
I’ve been influencing people to divulge secrets for decades. So, if you want to help, try a softer approach. And at the end, point to Liz and tell them that there is plenty of room inside the tent for real conservatives.
You can be pro-Life, pro-2nd Amendment, pro-Israel, etc., and still pull that lever for Harris.
In short, you can be a Liz Cheney Democrat. There might not be many of us, but we’re the ones that can tilt the election.
My voting pattern mirrors yours, but that said I can't go full Democrat, there's just too many basic principles on which I disagree with them. So I'll just stake out my position as a center right Independent (I left the Republican Party after Trump's hostile takeover of it and so many of its members turned into authoritarian-loving, power-hungry, spineless sycophants). Am voting for Harris, though it's more a vote against Trump. When did we become of country where a huge plurality of the population are gullible, anti-science, conspiracy-believing, pro-dictator rubes? And is that sustainable? Doubtful.
I'm a registered Democrat, or if you prefer, one of those so called "enemies of the people."
My views on Liz Cheney have taken a 180. Certain situations can wake us up to the true dangers our country faces, and I'm glad she and the other prominent Republican women speaking up against Trump are on the same side.
My only prediction about this election is that Trump's loss, if it happens, will be due in great part to US women. Not just the prominent Republicans who've torpedoed their careers to speak out but to the unknown millions (like me) who share their revulsion.
This election isn't just about us, either. The whole world is watching, as this editorial from Ohio demonstrates. My partner had a similar experience while spending a couple of months in England with his daughter, who lives there. https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/10/22/we-went-to-ireland-to-escape-the-stress-of-politics-but-europeans-very-nervous-about-america-too
